| Once upon a time, a human child was raised by the wolves of the Seeonee pack, somewhere deep in the indian jungle. There a black panther bought his life with a freshly killed bull, and a great bear conceded to educate him in the ways of the wild. There he made a mortal enemy of a man-eating tiger. Mowgli stayed with his pack for the first twelve years of his life before being briefly adopted by a couple from a nearby human village. The caste system and restrictive requirements for things such as clothes and money did not impress him, and he became disgusted by the way men would lie and cheat one another. By the time he became a grown man, Mowgli had realised his true fit was with neither wolves nor men, and hunted in the jungle with only his trusted friends from childhood. Then, the Adversary came. In the face of burning, pillaging enemy forces, Mowgli's jungle emptied into the mundane world. The talking animals that were his friends eventually found a place on the Fabletown Farm, hidden from 'mundy' sight, and Mowgli contined his life as a lone hunter. He is one of the 'Tourists', three Fables in the employ of the sheriff whose stated duty is to keep watch on those Fables living out in the wide world and ensure they are keeping their true origins a secret. In reality, the duties of a Tourist run to politics and espionage, they are among those privy to Fabletown's war plans, and occasionally instrumental in carrying them out. Mowgli has been a tourist for at least twenty years, though the true figure is more likely to run closer to a century or more. Recently, after spending six months in Baghdad negotiating with the Arabian fables beginning to arrive there, he was tasked with a special mission outside his regular Tourist jurisdiction. In order to redeem his friend Bagheera's freedom (after a nasty rebellion on the farm) Mowgli was sent to track and bring home the former sheriff, Bigby Wolf. Not an easy task, but achieved with the aid of his negotiation skills with Mundy humans and wolf packs. He has just been reassigned to become Fabletown's official ambassador to Fabletown East (Baghdad). His instructions involve teaching English to the Arabian Fables top military and political leaders, as well as negotiating a secret weapons project. |
